{"id":814,"date":"2011-02-06T20:52:35","date_gmt":"2011-02-06T20:52:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.celticunderground.net\/wordpress\/?p=814"},"modified":"2011-02-06T20:52:35","modified_gmt":"2011-02-06T20:52:35","slug":"celtic-domination-signals-change-of-the-guard","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/celticunderground.net\/celtic-domination-signals-change-of-the-guard\/","title":{"rendered":"Celtic Domination Signals Change of The Guard?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today was quite incredible.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Rangers took the lead through a great strike, but within 20\/25 minutes I was reminded of the recent Celtic v Hearts game.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>We were so much in control, every Celtic player knew that they and their team mates were better than the 11 individuals matched up against them.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>The comfortable nature with which Celtic players dealt with matters when pressured on the ball illustrated a level of confidence I\u2019ve not seen in a Celtic team since the O\u2019Neil years.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Despite us having the considerably more youthful side, it really did seem like men against boys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">We live in a different financial world than the O\u2019Neil years, and the signing of players must now be self generating.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>That means buying young or developing youths and hoping to unearth a gem.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>It might not always work (Adam Virgo) and it might take time (Ki), but if selling an \u201cAiden\u201d once in a while gives you the funds to buy Izaguirre, Hooper, Kayal &#038; Commons and still have cash in hand I\u2019m all for it.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>What we also have seen in the past few weeks since the New Year game is a manager who also seems confident in his abilities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I thought it was very telling when, in post match interviews, Lennon glibly stated \u201cwe know how they play, trying to catch us on the break, so we dealt with that.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Compare that with McCoist\u2019s comment that \u201cwe had no idea how they would line up until we saw the team sheet.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Over the past 20 years Smith has had the upper hand with his tactics \u2013 stack the team full of \u201cbig guys\u201d, play physical and play on the break.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Lennon knows we have the better team and tried one game (the first of the season at Celtic Park) to pick a team that could play Rangers off the pitch.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>It failed.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>He has now twice come up against Walter on Walter\u2019s own patch and matched up his system and come out on top.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>We might not have won today, but to have 10 men for most of a game at Ibrox and still finish with almost 70% possession tells its own story and even faced with losing his keeper, Lennon made \u201cbrave decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">I would have taken off Ki or Ledley and kept on Commons.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>When brining on Sammy, I would have kept on Kayal.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>But before the game Lennon identified that Walter likes fielding a team of \u201cbig guys.\u201d<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>He kept our height with his changes, and watching the game again illustrates that their pen came from Commons losing the ball, then 10 secs later Commons not tracking back with Naismith.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Like I say, I\u2019d have kept Commons on.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>Lenny didn\u2019t and we bossed the game.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whilst the press praised Walter for keeping a tight team together and buying \u201cquality rather than quantity\u201d, our plan was to have a young team who improved through the season, ready to be formidable by the end of the season.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>A bit of a gamble but it now looks like the right one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s easy to be full of the joys following performances like today and those already this year, and things may go wrong later, but at this stage things are looking good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">To the guy in the Broomloan Rear, Row S seat 128 (I think), I believe you\u2019re wrong.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>I believe Lennon does know what he\u2019s doing.<span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\"> <\/span>I don\u2019t think he\u2019s a useless @rsehole and I think he and his team are developing quite nicely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a record of 2-1-1 against Walter, and some unexpected team changes putting us on top, maybe there\u2019s a change of the guard coming at the wily old fox brigade.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Today was quite incredible.
